Deferment

Deferments defer principal during the deferment period and may or may not defer interest depending on the type of deferment requested and may or may not include a post-deferment grace period of six consecutive months. No payments are required during this deferment period. Borrowers must reapply for additional deferment periods. The maximum time allowed is three years, for some deferments, and may extend many years depending on how long you are in an in-school deferment, over the life of the loan. Supporting documentation of your claim is required.

Cancer Treatment Deferment for Perkins
You may qualify for this deferment if you are receiving treatment for cancer.

Deferment Request for HPSL, LDS, NSL, and PCL
You may qualify for this deferment if you are:

  • Active Duty as a member of a uniformed service of the United States
  • A volunteer under the Peace Corps Act
  • Pursuing advanced professional training, including internship and residency in the same discipline for which your loan was disbursed
  • On a leave of absence to pursue related educational activity in the same discipline for which your loan was disbursed
  • Participating in a graduate fellowship or related graduate educational activity in the same discipline for which your loan was disbursed.

Deferment Request for NFLP
You may qualify for this deferment if you:

  • graduated from your IU NFLP course of study and participate in a post-doctoral program.
  • perform active duty services as a member of the uniformed service.
  • graduated from your IU NFLP course of study and are employed as nurse faculty and are attending a nursing education program for further preparation as nurse faculty.
  • serve as a volunteer under the Peace Corps Act (up to three years).

You may qualify for this deferment if you:

  • are a recipient of a means-tested benefit like TANF, Section 8, SSI, or SNAP
  • work full-time and gross earnings are below 150% the federal poverty guideline for your family size.

In School Deferment Request for HPSL, LDS, NSL, and PCL
You may qualify for this deferment if you are attending school at least half-time in the discipline for which your loans were disbursed. Your deferment may have no grace period.

In School Deferment Request for IU Miller, Miller HomeStretch, Crimson, Cunninson, Henry Strong, Miholich, or Batman Institutional Loans
You may qualify for this deferment if you are attending school at least half-time.

  • graduated from your IU NFLP course of study and participate in a post-doctoral program.

Unemployment Deferment Request for Perkins
You may qualify for this deferment if you receive unemployment benefits or you are seeking and unable to find full-time employment. Full-time employment means working 30 or more hours a week in a position expected to last at least 3 consecutive months.

Forbearance

Forbearance defers only the principal, the interest continues to accrue and can be paid monthly during the period or in a lump sum at the end for Federal Perkins loans and eligible IU institutional loans. Interest must be paid monthly during the period for HPSL, LDS, NSL, PCL loans. Also, the use of forbearance can cause your HPSL, LDS, NFLP, NSL, or PCL monthly installment to increase as forbearance does NOT extend maturity dates. There is no grace period on forbearance requests. Supporting documentation of your claim is required.

You may request a general forbearance if you are temporarily unable to make your scheduled monthly loan payments. Some reasons may include:

General Forbearance Request for NFLP
You may be eligible for a forbearance if you are temporarily unable to make student loan payments because of poor health or other financial hardship.

Perkins Cancellation with Deferment

Cancellation with deferment defers both the principal and interest during the borrower’s period of service which schools also grant loan cancellation. No payments are required during this deferment period. Borrowers must submit deferment/cancellation form annually during the 5-7 year period of completed service. Supporting documentation of your claim is required.

Head Start, Pre-K, or Child Care Program Staff Member Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as:

  • a staff member in the educational part of a preschool program under Head Start
  • a staff member in pre-K or childcare program licensed or regulated by the state

Law Enforcement, Corrections Officer, Public Defense Lawyer, or Prosecuting Attorney Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as:

  • Law enforcement officer for a Federal, State, or local law enforcement agency
  • Corrections officer for a Federal, State, or local law enforcement agency
  • Lawyer employed by a public defender organization that is listed on the Federal Public & Community Defender Directory
  • Prosecuting Attorney for a Federal, State, or local office

Nurse, Medical Technician, or Fire Fighter Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as a:

  • Nurse or medical technician certified, registered, or licensed by the state.
  • Fire fighter for a Federal, State, or local fire department or fire district.

Provider of Early Intervention Services or Provider at Family Services Agency Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as a:

  • Provider of early intervention services to infants and toddlers (birth to age two) with disabilities in a public or non-profit program
  • Provider of services to high-risk children. High-risk children are defined as children under age 21 who are low-income; at risk of abuse or neglect; have been abused or neglected; have serious emotional, mental, or emotional behavioral disturbances; reside in placements outside of their homes; or are involved in the juvenile judicial system. The place of employment must be a public or non-profit child or family service agency and the services provided to adults must be secondary to services provided to high-risk children.

Teaching, Speech Language Pathologist, and Librarian Services Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as a:

  • Teacher in a federally designated low-income school or education services agency
  • Special education teacher
  • Teacher in a shortage field
  • faculty member at a tribal college or university
  • Speech language pathologist with a master's degree working exclusively for low-income schools
  • Librarian with a master's degree in library science employed in a low-income school or public library

Perkins Volunteer Service in the Peace Corps or Americorps VISTA Cancellation
You may qualify to cancel a portion or all of your Federal Perkins Loans if you are employed full-time as a:

  • A volunteer in the Peace Corps
  • A volunteer in the Americorps VISTA program and have elected not to receive a National Service Education award.

Discharge

Under certain conditions, your Perkins and/or IU Institutional Loan may be discharged. When your loan is discharged, it means that you are no longer obligated to pay back your loan. The determination made by the Department of Education must be sent to your lending institution.

Total and Permanent Disability Discharge
Under certain conditions, your Perkins Loan and/or Institutional Loan may be discharged. When your loan is discharged, it means that you are no longer obligated to pay back your loan. If determined eligible for Total and Permanent Disability by the Department of Education, it must be sent to your lending institution.

Nurse Faculty Loan Program Forms

Deferment Request for NFLP
You may qualify for this deferment if you:

  • graduated from your IU NFLP course of study and participate in a post-doctoral program.

  • graduated from your IU NFLP course of study and are employed as nurse faculty and are attending a nursing education program for further preparation as nurse faculty.

NFLP Employment Certification
You must provide certification of full-time employment in a qualified institution as nurse faculty to postpone and/or cancel your NFLP loans.

You may qualify to cancel a portion or up to 85% of your Nurse Faculty Loans if you are employed full-time as a nurse faculty employee in a school of nursing.

You may qualify to postpone repayment of your NFLP loans if you are employed full-time as a faculty member at a school of nursing and expect to claim cancellation of your load at the end of each year of employment completed.

Self-Certification for Primary Care Loans
PCL must certify annually they are practicing Primary Care as outlined in the promissory note for the Primary Care Loan.

Perkins Rehabilitation
You may successfully rehabilitate your Perkins loan one time, through 9 monthly on-time payments to clear the credit reporting for the history of the loan. The monthly rehabilitation payment will be based on your specific loan variables.

Name Change Request
You may request your lending institution update your name as a result of legal name change.

Temporary Repayment Arrangement
You may request a temporary decrease to your monthly installment if you are temporarily unable to make your scheduled monthly loan payments and are ineligible through the request of another form. Some reasons may include:
